Every book recommended on the Butterfly Books blog is a favourite, a carefully chosen and much loved book. So choosing one over another is a tough job! But for the end of 2017 I thought I’d choose the best of the best of this year’s recommendations.

Butterfly Books recommends all sorts of books, but this list will be the kinds of books that set this blog apart: books to support kids and teens through hard times, and a focus on books that reflect diversity.

This week: 6 to 8 year olds (click on the link to see the full review)

This interactive workbook helps adults and children work together to understand and deal with anxiety.

Its positive, encouraging tone, simple and clear ideas for making change, and interactive style make this a great choice for kids who are dealing with anxiety.

Using documents from an estate sale in 1828, Freedom Over Me tells the fictional stories of the slaves who were part of the sale.

Beautiful, interesting illustrations and simple, powerful text help children imagine the lives of the people in the book. But it does more than help children understand slavery. It also shows them that slaves were regular people who had hopes and dreams, friends and family.

Next week, find out my favourite choices for  9 – 11 year olds!

A Butterfly Books gift subscription makes a great holiday gift! You give it in December, and the child or teen keeps getting it for 3, 6, or 12 months! It’s a fun way to grow a love of reading, and a gift you can feel good about giving. Find out more and order today!
